MSc/PhD in Molecular Biology / Biotechnology + 2 – 4 years (equating to 6 years min.) working experience in mammalian cell culture in a commercial environment. Experience in gene expression optimization & characterization of cell culture processes. At least 2 years’ experience mentoring & managing a team of people. Experience in maintaining GLP would be ideal.

Terms: Permanent
Salary: R25 ~ R35 K+ per month, this is negotiable based on experience
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Cell Culture Scientist has arisen in a Cape Town-based start-up who are commercialising the bio-production of mammalian cells specific for use in the food industry. This company is made up of a small team of committed individuals who are well on their way to radically changing the face of sustainable food production in SA.
The aim of this role is to collaboratively develop & characterise highly productive cell culture processes and transfer this from the R&D level to a production & commercialisation process that is ready to launch. Once this is achieved successfully, the role will include implementing management processes to maintain this production and to further develop optimising efficiencies. Focus areas for this role include becoming the expert in cell culture development R&D to assist in scale-up, planning and implementing schedules together with the team, managing processes and people requirements, training & collaborating with R&D colleagues, administration & report management, GLP & Health & Safety adherence, and general team mentoring.
  • MSc / PhD in Biochemistry / Biotechnology or relevant life science  
  • 2-4 years+ commercial lab experience in mammalian cell culture
  • Gene expression optimization & characterization of cell culture process experience
  • 2 years team management experience in a working environment
  • Transfer of technology from R&D to production & commercial launch highly preferred
  • Mentoring colleagues in production, planning, optimising & trouble shooting
